Harrison Goodall Jr.Harrison Goodall, Jr., Board President
Harry is President/CEO of CNG Enterprises, a business development consulting firm. He grew up in the Congo (formerly Zair) and has retained close ties with Africa and the Middle East in multiple ways. He spent several decades working for Habitat for Humanity, first as a Project Director, then as National Director of Habitat for Humanity in Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and for a decade as Vice President for Habitat/Africa and the Middle East. In the business sector, Harry spent more than 10 years developing agricultural cooperatives and working in trading and consulting. Harry is a member of the National Association for Non-Profit Boards and a board member of Habitat for Humanity in Jacksonville, Florida. He was awarded a Medal of Civil Merit in Zaire. Fluent in four languages, he continues to travel extensively to Africa and the Middle East.

 
Susan LaubachSusan Laubach, M.Ed., Ph.D., Vice President
Susan brings to HANDS nearly 30 years of experience as an investment professional and accomplished educator and author. A resident of Baltimore, Susan has appeared on numerous television and radio talk shows speaking about her book “The Whole Kit & Caboodle: A Painless Journey to Investment Enlightenment”. She has also published a number of books about her personal passion - world travel. Susan has been a member of the Chautauqua Institution in New York State for more than twenty five years. She taught at Towson University and has been an active board member of many non-profit organizations.
 
Emad RamzyEmad Ramzy, PhD., Vice President
Emad is Professor and Chairperson at the Department of Geology in Assuit University. He received his Ph.D. in Geology from Assiut University and a Diploma of Membership in the Imperial College (D.I.C.) from the University of London. Emad is a member of the Editorial Board of the Egyptian Journal of Geology and a recognized author in his field. He currently serves as a consultant for UNESCO as well as for some petroleum services and groundwater companies. He is a member of the Board of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, and has been a chairman of the Board of Schools of the Nile Synod and of the Nile Synod Youth Committee, a member of the Nile Synod Council on Christian Education, a member of the Supreme Council of the Protestant Community of Egypt, and the General Secretary of the Protestant Community of Egypt. He has received numerous awards for his achievements in the field of Geology.
 
Karen SouryalKaren Souryal, Treasurer
A former Executive Director of HANDS, Karen is currently serving as a Senior Administrator for Georgetown University School of Foreign Service - Qatar. Before coming to HANDS, she worked with CEOSS as an International Relations Coordinator. As Executive Director at HANDS, she played a crucial role in leading its growth and expanding its focus of work. Karen has experience with urban community participation programs in the United States in NY, PA, and NJ. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Cornell University and a Master’s degree in Economic Development from Eastern College.
 
Nabil S. AbadirNabil Samuel Abadir, PhD., Board Member
Since 1997, Nabil has served as the Director General of Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Service (CEOSS) in Cairo, Egypt. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an honorary PhD from St. Francis Xavier University. He is an advisory board member of the NGO Service Center in Egypt and of the Social Research Center ’s Research for Development program at the American University in Cairo and a chairman of its executive committee. He is also a board member of Habitat for Humanity International, and a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Arab NGO Network. Additionally, Nabil represents CEOSS as a member organization with CIVICUS (World Alliance for Citizen Participation), is a member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs (EFCA), of the Women’s Political Participation Committee of the National Council for Women, and of the Youth Policies Committee of the General Secretariat of the National Democratic Party. He participated in the 2000 UNESCO conference on Education for All and the 1998 World Conference on Girls’ Education as a member of the official delegation under the leadership of Egypt’s Minister of Education. Furthermore, Nabil was a member of the Preparatory Committee for the Second Arab NGO Conference organized by the Arab Council for Childhood and Development.
 
James M. CopelandJames M. Copeland, Board Member
Jim Copeland is a partner in a Washington government relations firm, CJ Strategies. Prior to beginning his government relations work in the early 1980’s, he served as Deputy Assistant to President Jimmy Carter, worked on Capitol Hill and was involved with the banking industry. Jim served on the Habitat for Humanity International Board of Directors from 1998 to 2005 and is a principal with the Council for Excellence in Government. He has a BA from Trinity College in Illinois and an MBA from Loyola University in Chicago.
 
Robert J. LudwigRobert J. Ludwig, Board Member
Former Board President of HANDS, Bob is the Administrative Manager of the Brain-Gut Center at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York. He is also Vice President of Conference Archives, Inc., a technology company located in Johnstown, PA which specializes in electronic knowledge transfer systems. He is a 1967 graduate of St. Lawrence University, where he earned a degree in Philosophy. Robert spent 25 years in retail, during which time he also worked with internationally acclaimed artist, Maritza Morgan, producing artwork and traveling throughout the world, mostly in developing countries. One of the Morgan-Ludwig collections, Pyramids for Peace, a collection of 12 murals celebrating the development and dialogue work underway in Egypt, is co-owned by HANDS and is currently on tour throughout the US. For 30 years, Robert was a full-time member of the Chautauqua Institution community in western New York state. He resides in New York City.
 

Suzan HabachySuzan Habachy, Board Member
Suzan was born and raised in Egypt. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College and Harvard University, her credentials include 24 years in the United Nations managing economic and social affairs projects benefiting women and disadvantaged groups in Africa and the Caribbean. Suzan also served for six and a half years as Executive Director of Trickle Up, an international economic development program assisting societies' poorest. She serves on the Board of the Association of Retired International Civil Servants (AFICS). In recent years, she has worked tirelessly with her sister, Nimet Habachy, as a volunteer advocate for the work of the Association for the Protection of the Environment in the Moqqattam area of Cairo. Suzan lives in New York City.

 

Linda Johnston, PhD., Board Member
Dr. Linda Johnston is the Director of the Master of Science in Conflict Management Program and the Center for Conflict Management at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a trained mediator and facilitator and works both domestically and internationally. She has done conflict resolution work in Ukraine, Republic of Georgia, Barbados, Nigeria, and Egypt. Dr. Johnston serves on the Executive Board of the International Peace Research Association Foundation and administers the Senesh Fellowship Program. She is also on the on-line advisory committee for the UN School of Peace in Costa Rica. She has a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University.

 

Shaker KhayattShaker Khayatt, PhD., Board Member
Shaker is President of Khayatt & Company, an investment banking firm. Prior to forming his own firm in 1979, he was Executive Vice President, Partner and Director of Laidlaw Adams & Peck. Shaker was a prominent security analyst and has been in the investment business for over 35 years. He is a Director of American Capital Management and advises several international investment organizations. Shaker is a graduate of M.I.T. and the Harvard Graduate School of Business.

Jennifer CateJennifer Cate, Executive Director
Jennifer spent most of her life abroad, living in Iran, Syria, Egypt and Kazakhstan. Knowledge of Arabic and 10 years in Egypt has contributed to her special appreciation for Egyptian culture. She started as a Program Manager at HANDS in 2003, and since 2005 has been the Executive Director, working to increase the capacity of HANDS. Jennifer holds a BA in English from Wheaton College, IL and an MA in Applied Linguistics from the American University in Cairo.
 
Ivana Veselinovic-SmuckerIvana Veselinovic-Smucker, Development Officer
Ivana joined HANDS in January 2005. She lived in Egypt for more than 3 years working for one of our largest partner organizations, CEOSS, as the International Relations Coordinator. She holds a BA in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Belgrade and an MPA degree from George Mason University. Ivana has extensive experience in relief and development work in the Balkans, Egypt and the US.
